- When we remodeled our kitchen floor which was built over dirt we found a cannonball. We also had the opportunity to see the Merritt house in Columbia which is one of that town's oldest homes and that of the Wellsweep in Andover and found both had similar structures in the basement. Our home also has large chestnut support beams and wide floor boards in the living room. Our center chimney also has a bake oven which is similar to what I have seen in historic homes.
Importance:"Over time our home has undergone several additions prior to our purchasing this home and we cannot attest to the date of these additions. The center core of the house however is different from the rest of the house. When we purchased it, it was advertised as being built in 1755 which probably is correct. The rest of the information we have regarding our home comes from Marion Celio who was the Town Clerk at the time, Alton Hall who at one time also owned this home, and our own personal experience with the renovations we have been involved with."
(Paula Jessen (homeowner))"Information which has not been validated for our home is that it was built by a sea captain and also served as a stagecoach way station. The present road (316) actually crossed our property on the north side of our home."
